Inviata - 25/11/2005 : 23:29:26 J.Donald Walters, americano di origini rumene, nel 1948 all'età di 22 anni entrò nell'ordine SRF, ricevendo l'iniziazione dallo stesso Yogananda. Egli prese i voti finali nel 1955 da Daya Mata, (tre anni dopo la dipartita del Maestro avvenuta nel 1952) in quell'occasione prese il nome monastico di Kriyananda. Egli servì quale vice presidente nell'opera dal 1960 fino al 1962, anno in cui il gruppo dirigente della SRF decise all'unanimità di chiedere le sue dimissioni.
I motivi dell'estromissione di Walters dall'ordine non sono mai stati dichiarati apertamente dalla SRF, per motivi ovvi di rispetto. Tuttavia sembrerebbe, per quanto emerso dalle testimonianze rese durante il processo Bertolucci, che durante un suo soggiorno in India, intrattenne rapporti equivoci con due monache che lo servivano durante il suo giro di conferenze, ma in particolare con una di esse. Tale comportamento, fu scoperto dal Gruppo Dirigente della SRF perchè i parenti di quelle due giovani monache indiane protestarono vivamente per la condotta del loro inviato.
Ma questa motivazione non fu la sola, seppure fosse più che sufficiente a segnare la sua estromissione dalla SRF. Walters aveva preso delle iniziative presso il Governo Indiano senza aver avuto l'autorizzazione dalla Casa Madre, che si trovò così in serio imbarazzo. Egli, di carattere audace e temerario aveva esercitato forti pressioni per ottenere la concessione di un'autorizzazione a creare un ashram in New Dehli, in un area che il Governo aveva destinato ad altri usi, insistendo oltremodo per averne l'uso anche ove ciò risultava andare contro ogni normativa prestabilita.
In realtà Kriyananda è sempre stato molto "autonomo" e considerava l'organismo Direttivo della SRF poco intraprendente. Grazie all'ampia capacità di manovra che aveva sul patrimonio dell'organizzazione e con il suo atteggiamento volitivo egli credeva di rendere un buon servizio all'opera del Maestro in India, che giudicava spenta e poco determinata, credendo inoltre che il Direttivo della SRF potesse poi accettare il suo comportamento alla luce dei risultati che sperava di ottenere. Questa visione è ancora oggi viva in lui, e se ne leggono chiaramente le note in quasi tutte le sue dichiarazioni pubbliche contro la SRF.
La sua posizione, sostenuta con pervicacia anche oggi, appare essere quella di uno "ispirato" che vuole fare, che sa come fare, ma che è bloccato dalla timorosa ritrosia e mancanza di visione degli altri, perciò crede di avere il diritto di fare da sè ciò che ritiene necessario, superando ogni altra obiezione che in un gruppo decisionale è naturale discutere e soppesare insieme agli altri. In più egli sostiene che le sue posizioni sono legittimate direttamente dal Guru, e che egli ricevette precise disposizioni in merito.Tuttavia non ha mai presentato alcuna prova a sostegno di queste sue affermazioni, mentre i discepoli diretti del Maestro sostengono una direzione molto diversa da quella di Walters.
